A Welsh saga in the best selling tradition of Iris Gower Florence Philpotts defies her family and boyfriend to take a position as an apprentice hairdresser. It is a career she feels sure she was born to succeed in, although her apprenticeship is spent avoiding the attentions of her boss, Mr Tony. In the midst of a glorious local scandal, the opportunity arises to take over the salon but her parents refuse to lend her the money to do so. Tony's brother, Cliff, offers her marriage in return for her own salon. Is this a step too far even for impulsive, ambitious Florence Philpotts...?
