Synopsis

A fast moving historical novel which opens in the year 1869 when Queen Victoria's popularity is low among the people of England and the aris-tocracy look to the pleasure seeking Prince of Wales as their social leader. Anne Seaton enters the world of London society under the patronage of General and Lady Her-rington. She loves Max Radleigh, the General's aide, who is a secret courier to the French govern-ment, and spurns the advances of his half-brother Paul who wishes to make her his mistress. Count Otto von Meckleberg a young Prussian officer becomes increasingly infatuated by her beauty. Soon Anne finds herself caught up in a tangle of conflicting emotions of love and jealousy which takes place amid the changing scenes of the Lon-don social season, the extravagant ceremonies of the opening of the Suez Canal in Egypt, and the dangerous shift of fortunes caused by the Franco Prussian war.
