A polgnant and sensitive novel of family relationships, set in a traditional English farming community immediately after WWII. Bess Bennett is just ten years old when she first meets Ian Sinclair at the annual Harvest Home supper. The Sinclair family are new to the village and are seen by most as outsiders, especially as rumours begin to circulate about the relationship between Bess' father and Ian's mother, Isabella. Meanwhile Edgar Bennett, an ambitious man, will let nothing stand in the way of his determination to extend his land by joining his family with that of the local gentry - even if this means sacrificing his daughter.
