Synopsis

A wonderful North-East saga ... Born the day of the great mining disaster at Jane Pit, Merry Trent's start in life is marked with tragedy. Brought up by her grandmother Peggy in poverty-stricken isolation, they receive an unwelcome visit from the ruthless mining agent, Miles Gallagher. He callously rapes Peggy, and she becomes pregnant with his child. Despite the hardships Merry begins training as an apprentice nurse, where she attracts the attentions of Miles' son Dr Tom Gallagher, and history repeats itself when she falls pregnant. She faces a tough choice: a marriage of convenience or destitution and the workhouse.
