Synopsis

Mark Travers did not, in any case, want a woman plastic surgeon cluttering up his hospital. Since she had come to Bengal at the special request of the Rajah, he might make use of her visit to obtain some much-needed equipment for the operating theatre, but that was the only gain that would arise from her visit, as far as he could see. On the debit side, she had been preceded by an anonymous letter accusing her of a past concealed marriage, present intrigues and future mischief-making; and though he tried not to be influenced by such a document, he couldn't put it quite out of his head. The more he found himself attracted to Ruth, the more its insinuations returned to torment him, while she, for her part, was justifiably bewildered and annoyed by the way he behaved to her. It took a whole series of dramatic happenings to put things right between them.
