After a family scandal, Francesca takes a job as secretary to Miles Hunter, a famous writer who buys the estate that had been her home. As she struggles to look after her truculent teenaged sister, Miles asks her to marry him in what she supposes is to be a marriage of convenience. But at the same time an old beau returns to the neighborhood and seems interested in picking up the pieces.
