Rufus MacIan and Alistair Denune have feuded for years, but now their children are grown. Michael Denune and Maura MacIan want to marry - must marry, for Maura is pregnant. But Rufus will only permit it if the Denunes will agree to a hostage, to be held until Maura's child is born. How can Casandra refuse, when she loves her brother even if this does bring her into contact with Rufus's adopted son, Adam macIan? He, at least, seems to be civilised...until Cassandra realises the feud hasn't died....
