After family misfortune, Jane Simpleton has been forced to be the lady of the house at a rather young age. But she takes comfort in looking after her father, nanny, and two sisters. When her father’s health suffers, however, their quaint, idyllic life as dairy farmers in Eland Green is threatened by dwindling funds. As luck would have it, a rare opportunity presents itself at Star Castle on St. Mary’s Island. Should Jane fear the master of the castle, the war-ravaged duke? The consequences of war are written upon the face of Lord Edward Craven, Duke of March, who has sought out the seclusion of Star Castle. He begrudgingly takes a new maid, but finds Jane Simpleton anything but simple. Jane sees past his scars and frightening countenance, and the Duke of March ultimately comes to view Jane as… the Mistress of Star Castle.
