Synopsis

John Lyndsev, silk merchant, is illegally dealing in China's Chusan. He and his wife are brutally murdered. Margaret, their six-year-old child is rescued by Mei-ling and brought up as a Chinese, safe in the heart of the family of Chang. But at her coming of age, Margaret who has been renamed Moonpearl, is married by proxy to Sun Kim, the magnificent and overpowering Eurasian. She is forced to bend to his will. The Opium War explodes with all its ferocity and the great family of Sun battles for survival. In the meantime the Changs perish in a terrible way. Moonpearl herself suffers loneliness, despair and anguish before she finally returns to the smiling plum blossom-covered hills of her Chinese home with the man she loves.
