"Remember, from now on you are the daughter of the Lady Alys de Brusac. If you fall in any way you will die." In the turbulent early years of Henry II's reign. Kathryn's feudal overlord has dragged her from serfdom, scrubbed off her peasant dirt and moulded her into a noble lady. He intends her to impersonate the granddaughter of the dying Sir Piers de Brusac in order to gain his lands. Kathryn plays her part well - until she learns that the man she has been forced to marry, Sir Richard Tremaine, is plotting to slaughter the king.
