War rages, but the women and children of Liverpool’s Dr Barnado’s Home cannot give up hope. An Orphan’s Secret is a gripping saga about love, loss and war. Liverpool, 1942. Rose is haunted by the ghosts of a shameful past. She is unable to get close to her fellow staff at the Dr Barnado’s Orphanage where she works as a nurse, for fear they might uncover her secret. So Rose finds a friend in an unexpected place: Frederic, a six-year-old orphan with a secret of his own. Meanwhile, during Rose’s visits to her family home, she encounters two men from her past, with very different outcomes. Joey is a naval officer now, and their attraction is instant – but how can Rose be with him if she can never be honest? And then there’s the father of her child, who rejected her when she was pregnant. Now badly lame, David has fallen on hard times and attempts to blackmail Rose. She can’t afford to pay to keep him quiet, not while she also has to support her ill sister and father – but how can Rose ever come clean about her past?
