Synopsis

“Passion In The Pines” is a sensual historical novel that introduces Essex County, Virginia’s post Civil War community. Passion drives the actions of this battle weary region as they struggle to accept defeat in a brutal war between the states. The novel is loosely based on actual events and contains part of my own family history. The Civil War imposed financial pressures on Essex County and Middlesex County, Virginia. The social elites attempt to maintain pre Civil War traditions as well as stabilize social, economic, and political life. A young Confederate Captain, Virgil Hunt, searches for a life that will ease the pains of unpleasant war memories. His search ends in Essex County where he is welcomed as a hero of the war. He attends the social gatherings of the county elites and finds a new beginning. The social elites introduce Virgil to the daughter of a wealthy Tidewater land-owner. Rebecca Warrenly is impressed by the northern reared southern officer. Virgil’s solemn promotion of the southern way of life was embraced as a symbol of defeat in war with dignity. She eventually succumbs to his subtle masculine demeanor. Rebecca builds a loving family and lifestyle that balances social obligation and sensual desires. Trouble ensues when Virgil’s sensual desires overcome his political and social obligations. He demands more from Rebecca as the year ends and new year resolutions are promised. Rebecca promises to devote more time to their intimate moments. Will Virgil accept her proposal? Will Rebecca fulfill her promise?
