The Last Irish Warrior Queen Queens ruled the British Isles in the 16th century, including Elizabeth I, Mary Queen of Scots, and Gráinne Ní Mháille, known as Grace O Malley, the famed Pirate Queen of Connacht. Fierce and ambitious, Gráinne was born into the family of the great seafaring O Malley chieftains of Clew Bay. As the brutal Tudor conquest of Ireland tried to crush the Gaelic Irish, the Warrior Queen used cunning, charm, diplomacy, warfare, and piracy to protect her people and expand her family s territory. With a ring of castles and a fleet of galleys, she built her own army and formidable shipping empire, traded with Spain and France, and menaced English shipping. In a face-to-face meeting with Queen Elizabeth, she refused to bow. In the 20th century, her legendary independence helped kindle the battle for an Irish nation.
