Laurian was not really on holiday; she had come to this part of France because it was where her mother, Helene Ladebat, had come from, and she wanted to find out all she could about her; and if the Saint-Vires. who must have known Helene, could be of help, so much the better. But just how had Helene been connected with the family ? For as Launan pursued her enquiries she unearthed a story and a secret that might perhaps have been better kept quiet—particularly as, if the story were true, it would effectually destroy the love that had developed between Laurian and Gilles de Saint-Vire.
