The extraordinary news that her father is alive sends Diana Oakes to her birthplace, New Zealand. Diana wants to find a job that will enable her to approach, with dignity, the father whom she and her mother deserted twenty years ago. Arriving in Rotorua with its steam jets, its geysers, its sinister mud pools, Diana feels herself to be in a Jules Verne land. The country is not at all like home, and nor are the people. Was this why her mother left?
