From the moment Simon pulled her out of the fishpond, where she had chased her puppy, he found himself sympathetic to the drenched, waif-like little person he had rescued. Dressed as an urchin, Miss Harriet Pendeniston's disguise was a shock to Simon. She was definitely not a boy! Whereupon he took her home to Furzedown and put her in the care of his warm and motherly housekeeper. This marked the beginning of a whole new life for Harriet, who had been running away from the disgusting advances of an erstwhile employer.
