Tilly Masters hopes to follow in her father's footsteps as the village blacksmith and is upset when he takes on an assistant. But she falls in love with Nathan and is devastated when he enlists and is sent to France. She vows to wait for him but her aunt has other ambitions for her - marriage to the local squire's son.
