Synopsis

Dan Bowmaker, his indomitable wife Peggy and their family live and work by the sea in Essex. As they grow up, his four daughters begin to go their separate ways - Connie is to marry a tugboat man, but dreads the sea snatching away her happiness. Love will take well-spoken Annie thousands of miles away to a new life. Pam falls in love with the son of Dan's mortal enemy, reviving a feud which threatens to split the family, while Josie, the youngest, longs for high society. Her Cockney boyfriend Arthur doesn't measure up to her ideal - or does he?
