Adelaide, escaping from the bitter political rivalries of the Braganza family, flees her English home. She must sail to Brazil where she has been promised refuge on the estate of Dom Martim - a man of dark, brooding passions. He was a mystery to all who knew him - a man who had never been free to love just one woman. Longing for his love, tortured by his strong embraces, Adelaide knows that only when he is free to love can he learn of the passion burning within her.
