The lady was not for sale. Selena Merrick anticipated having a pleasant vacation in New Orleans. She was even lighthearted enough to joke with a group of conventioneers who mistakenly thought she was a lady of the night. Chance Barkley, however, overhearing Selena's foolish words about the fees she supposedly charged, took them seriously and insisted on hiring her services.
