The fingers of pianists are broken for playing bourgeois music, teachers are humiliated and worse-the Cultural Revolution is in full fury on the mainland, and neighbouring Hong Kong is rife with rumors and riots. University lecturer Dimitri Johnston has lived all his life in Hong Kong and regards it as his home, while his English wife cannot settle there. Meeting a young Chinese dancer, a refugee from the mainland, he becomes infatuated with her. But when they witness a police action against marauding demonstrators, they are both forced to confront choices that may devastate their lives.
