When Claire Darley's romance with Chris Durham comes to an end, she leaves London to help her aunt, who owns a small private school in the Yorkshire Dales. Here she meets Mark Richmond, the difficult and disturbed child of the local doctor whose marriage had ended in divorce. As she comes to understand the boy, Claire finds she is falling in love with his father. Even though David Richmond loves her, he refuses to ask her to share his lovely moorland home, Partridge Hill. How can Claire convince him that he is not making another mistake?
