Synopsis

Installing his family in fashionable Chelsea, overlooking the changing river, Samuel Quilter settled down to a life of security and ease befitting a respected and successful wool merchant...The days of Civil War, the Great Fire and the Plague were lost in history and 18th Century London had become a centre of elegance and prosperity... until the Young Pretender marched out of Scotland and the French fleet gathered in the English Channel...The stirring events would touch Samuel's five sons... but danger threatened from inside the family as well, and would leave him feeling cheated, as though he had been brought a magnificent peacock, only to find beneath the shining feathers nothing but a dead bird...
