Synopsis

A compelling new saga from a well-loved author Durham, 1917 Returning to his home town from the Great War, Allan Jamieson is hailed as a hero. But inside he is a changed man, so affected by his experiences at the Front that he withdraws from his wife Kaye and their young son. His best friend Jake is changed, too, grieving for his beloved wife who died in childbirth whilst he was away fighting. Alone in his grief, Jake turns to Lillian, a woman whose soldier husband, serving under him, was killed in action. Meanwhile Allan resumes his civilian career as a respected barrister, taking on the defence of a beautiful young woman accused of killing her war-wounded husband. Alienated from his wife, it is not long before Allan and Erin have become recklessly involved. And so the aftermath of a dreadful war casts dark shadows over a town, and five different people struggling to rebuild their shattered lives?
