Benedicte Marie-Anne de Savinc had been left a fortune on condition that she married one of the nephews of the late Marquis d'Arbouville. Benedicte had counted nine of these, and she looked forward to seeing these noble lords go through their paces to win her. The head of her family, however, the Prince de Valence, was in a hurry to dispose of her and get back to his hunting. A struggle, sometimes amusing, sometimes tragic, and with an unexpected ending, develops between him and Benedicte. In her new seventeenth-century French romance Frances Lang, who with A Pride of Princesses won the Romantic Novelists' Association Historical Award in 1961, has told, with a gentle and delightful wit, the story of a young woman faced with a choice of husbands.
