Toni Ashley enjoyed studying art in Cornwall under the tuition of Jake Tregarron. Bt Jake, although a wonderful teacher, was something of an enigma. He bore the characteristic birthmark of his disreputable ancestor Tobyn Tregarron – but did that necessarily mean that he too was a disreputable character? Anyway, why should Toni concern herself with him at all with Fran Casey firmly in possession?
