Synopsis

When her own family are killed in the Blitz, Abby Nichols is taken to live with her uncle and aunt in Kent. Her uncle is a kindly man but Aunt Milicent makes it plain how bitterly she resents this cuckoo in her cosy, middle-class nest. Her own children, Richard and Stella, are given every advantage in life and Milicent has a dazzling marriage in view for her son. But Abby is kept in the background, denied the opportunity to develop her own talents and ruthlessly crushed by her cold-hearted aunt. Unfortunately, Richard and Abby fall deeply in love with each other. Milicent intervenes, using all her cunning to part the young lovers in a cruel and heartless manner. Her duplicity succeeds and Abby and Richard both marry other people. But the ties that bind them cannot be so easily severed...
