Alexander McNair is a changed man since visiting the island of Tora. He is now heir to the Strathcairn estate, and the discovery of his son has precipitated his marriage to Victoria Liversidge, whom he met and seduced on Tora. As the couple vanishes abroad on honeymoon, Alexander hopes to forget Mhairi-Anne Graham - the Witching Woman - who claimed his heart during his island visit. But when they both learn that James McNair has become engaged to Mhairi-Anne, Alexander is consumed with jealousy - whilst Victoria is terrified her husband may discover that he has married the wrong woman.
