After the devastation of the Revolutionary War, Mercy Creed and Addison Berkeley's lives continue to intertwine, but her secrets and preconceived ideas keep pushing them apart. Mercy listens to gossip and believes Addison is arrogant, greedy, and a terrifying man. All the while, she believes her father's accountant, Ian Magregor, is a humble, giving, and wonderful man. However, things are not always as they seem. Benjamin Franklin, George Washington, John Hancock and many other historic figures join Mercy and Addison on their journey toward understanding each other—and more importantly toward understanding the mercy of God.
