Will Warburton, the last of Gissing's twenty-three novels, was written while he was dying(1902-3) and published post-humously in 1905. Despite the fact that he referred to it disparagingly during his last months, it is one of his greatest books, another in the long line of neglected masterpieces he have to a largely indifferent posterity. A brilliant examination of the psychological impact of class barriers and pressures on a sensitive nature, Will Warburton describes, from the inside, the pathology of class fear and the ways in which it can govern human intercourse.
