Romance books of the 1900s

Edwardian romance and the early twentieth century. Passion presses against propriety.

The turn of the century loosened the corset, slightly. Edith Wharton dissected love and society's cruelties in The House of Mirth and The Age of Innocence, where desire and convention collide and convention usually wins — beautifully, devastatingly. Elinor Glyn scandalized readers with Three Weeks (1907) and gave the era its byword for sex appeal: "It." E.M. Forster's A Room with a View let passion win out over propriety. The love story was becoming franker about wanting, even as the wider world still demanded discretion.

Readers come to the 1900s for romance poised on a threshold — between Victorian restraint and modern frankness, where a stolen kiss carries enormous weight. Content stays largely closed-door, the sensuality more suggested than shown, though Glyn's generation began to push. The prose is elegant and observant. This is the shelf for readers who love the ache of love thwarted by class and custom, the charged glamour of the Edwardian world, and romance that simmers just below a polished, proper surface.
