Romance books of the 1920s–40s

Jazz Age sparkle, wartime longing, and the birth of the modern genre romance.

These decades gave romance its first true architects. Georgette Heyer, beginning in the 1920s, single-handedly invented the Regency romance as a genre — witty, meticulous, and endlessly imitated ever since. Daphne du Maurier's Rebecca (1938) fused romance with gothic suspense and haunted the genre forever after. The Jazz Age brought glamour and a new boldness; the war years that followed brought separation, letters across oceans, and love sharpened by the threat of loss. Out of this stretch came the templates — the Regency, the gothic, the wartime romance — that the paperback boom would later mass-produce.

Readers come to the 1920s–40s for sparkle and yearning in equal measure: champagne-bright comedies of manners alongside aching stories of love held apart by distance and danger. Content remains closed-door, the heat carried by wit and tension rather than explicit scenes. The craft, especially Heyer's, is dazzling. This is the shelf for readers who want the genre's blueprints — the banter, the gothic shiver, the love that survives a war — drawn by the writers who set the patterns.
